We are thrilled to have been awarded a 3-year grant (2022-2025) from the National Science Foundation to become a BioSci Research Experiences for Teachers (BIORETS) training site. Each summer, we will recruit and provide excellent stipends for middle school and high school teachers to learn our bacterial evolution-in-action curriculum, and then conduct their own experiments as extensions of this program. They will then write their own curriculum materials suitable for adoption in their classes the following year.

In 2022, we enrolled 8 incredible teachers from Pittsburgh Public Schools:

  1. Ashanti York, high school, Student Achievement Center
  2. Denise Tyler, middle school, Westinghouse Academy
  3. Karie Suhajda, high school, CAPA
  4. Jeffrey Williams, middle school, CAPA
  5. Mariah Monroe, high school, Allderdice
  6. Rachel Gerhard-Sterner, high school, Allderdice
  7. Gina McGrath, high school, Brashear
  8. Lori Gaido, high school, Brashear

We also enjoyed dedicated support from teachers experienced with our curriculum, including:

  1. Edwina Kinchington, Pittsburgh Sci-Tech
  2. Tom Lavelle, Seneca Valley HS
  3. Nicole Nesbitt, Winchester Thurston

We look forward to announcing our 2023 cohort shortly!
